Certificação dos produtos agroalimentares da economia azul

SmartBlueChain

Processo de certificação inovador, através da criação de um mercado aberto e descentralizado de Certificação Transparente e Compreensível de Produtos Sustentáveis, direcionado ao setor da economia azul.

The Project
Certification of blue economy agri-food products

The main goal of SmartBlueChain is the development of an innovative certification process, through the creation of an open and decentralised market of Transparent and Comprehensible Certification of Sustainable Products, directed to the blue economy sector.

This certification process aims to increase the added value of “blue” products, resulting in increased competitiveness of Portuguese companies in this sector. SmartBlueChain will provide a marketplace on the supply side, allowing producers, suppliers, distributors and certifiers to transact evidence on the sustainability of their products and operations, so that consumers can choose products they trust, through their auditability.

Companies will have access to a mechanism that will allow them to certify their suppliers, based on several dimensions, providing evidence of good commercial and social practices that consumers value and that contribute to competitive differentiation. The result of this certification will be a set of user-friendly badges, which will be made available in an authenticated way in retailers’ online channels and in offline channels via forms of labelling and packaging verifiable by the end consumer.

Impact
Transparent/Open Source Governance Model based on Blockchain

A differentiating factor of the project is its innovative governance model that consists of 4 main entities: end customers, certifiers, brands and suppliers. These entities work together to produce badges, which are essentially trust scores referring to “blue” product attributes related to sustainability and social responsibility. Brands and suppliers can sign up to receive these badges or can submit one of their products or processes for independent verification. In this way, they can accumulate points towards the desired certification, providing evidence that can be validated by independent third parties, such as consumers (not verified) and/or, mainly, certifiers (verified and made official by the system). The certification process itself is transparent and is implemented digitally through a “smart contract”, which requires evidence to be provided to reward entities with their badges.

Badges have four levels of verification:

Partial evidence provided

All evidence provided

Independently verified evidence

Officially verified evidence

In the end, consumers can purchase these products and offer their own qualitative analysis, checking the evidence and flagging transactions in the system that they interpret as fraudulent or suspicious, so that they can be verified again by the certifying entities. This process will give rise to a fully responsible system through the attribution and maintenance of badges, which will be easy for consumers to understand.

Impact
Brand certification in distribution channels
“Blue” brands and products will have a unique ID in the certification system, which will allow consumers to access their entire history, their current badges, those that have already expired and the stories associated with their creation, all of which will be accessible by scanning or inserting the product ID or through the API, which can be integrated into the company’s website, e-commerce stores or even in its physical retail spaces. This will allow brands or marketplaces to create sustainable product sections that can be easily found by customers wherever they are, knowing that there will be a recognisable seal of excellence created within the project and an open and auditable governance system to support them.

Impact
Creating a new market for certification of sustainable “blue” goods

The project will also enable the creation of a single market for sustainable products, where brands of products sourced from the sea, can find suppliers, distributors and certifying bodies, who share their values / contribute to their certifications, as well as being able to validate their badges and the evidence provided.

Impact

End customers as active agents rewarded for their participation

Creation of a rewards system that promotes customer participation as an active agent and maintains a value that can be negotiated in the system. The tokens underlying the blockchain system can be purchased as ways to reward customers for their loyalty, feedback and help as unofficial “certification entities”. One of the objectives of the project is to fully scale this reward system and create a utility token that can be traded in the system, i.e., has economic value and, therefore, can be used by company participants to guarantee the authenticity of their transactions in the system.

How it works

SmartBlueChain will allow the creation of an online and offline certification system for sustainable seafood and aquaculture products, by assigning badges that classify the production process in various dimensions of the product according to the level of information collected, either by the producer or by other stakeholders, namely the consumer, thus generating an open and decentralised market of Transparent and Understandable Certification of Sustainable Products. With this, the consumer can check, at the point of offline consumption (via QR Code scanning), or at the point of online consumption (directly, through the integration of the SDK with the online retailer), the validity of the badge assigned, as well as the entire record of the evidence that substantiates it, fundamentally changing the perception of its value and creating differentiation factors for sustainable products.

Online and offline certification

An online and offline certification system for sustainable seafood and aquaculture products

Open API

An open API that records interactions between production and value chain on the blockchain, whether from sensors or manual interactions from well-identified stakeholders

Predictive algorithms

An algorithm that classifies the production process on various dimensions of the product according to the level of information collected through the API, to increase consumer confidence

Production process classification

A service for brands and producers to automatically expose their 'proof of work' ratings in a trusted way across retail channels (using a QR code and a label that provides customers with a complete view of the value chain)

Reliable exposure of ratings

Predictive algorithms that analyse the top-rated products in a given year, identifying key predictive properties of economic and environmental success.

Working together for a green, competitive and inclusive Europe

Through the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA), Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are internal market partners with the Member States of the European Union.

As a way of promoting a continuous and balanced strengthening of economic and commercial relations, the parties to the EEA Agreement established a multi-annual Financial Mechanism, known as EEA Grants.

The EEA Grants aim to reduce social and economic disparities in Europe and strengthen bilateral relations between these three countries and the beneficiary countries.

For the period 2014-2021, a total contribution of 2.8 billion euros was agreed for 15 beneficiary countries. Portugal will benefit from a budget of 102.7 million euros.

This project was funded under the Blue Growth program.
